Game Freak Talks ‘Pokemon Grey’, Upcoming Releases

Game Freak is more comfortable remaking old titles than any other company in the history of video games, and fans of the ‘Pokemon’ franchise are obviously ecstatic about that. Game Freak’s focus right now is on the upcoming release of their most ambitious titles yet, ‘Ultra Sun’ and ‘Ultra Moon’. Even with these two titles due for release in just a few month’s time it hasn’t prevented the company from looking backward to a period of time when a ‘Pokemon Grey’ was a possibility in the cards. Fans of the series have always wondered why it never happened and fortunately there are answers to be had.

Junichi Masuda, the co-founder of Game Freak, gave an interview with the video game news magazine Game Informer this past week. His interview went into a vast array of topics but it eventually made its way back to the topic of ‘Pokemon Gray’. Casual fans may not remember, but hardened fans will: ‘Pokemon Gray’ was supposed to hit shelves in place of the eventually released ‘Black 2’ and ‘White 2’. The ‘Black’ and ‘White’ titles were released in 2010 with their remakes hitting shelves in 2012.

Fans around the world had been expecting a ‘Gray’ announcement but it had never came. The reason was more pragmatic than anyone could have guessed. Masuda expounded on Game Freak’s decision to release ‘Black 2’ and ‘White 2’ instead by focusing on the concept of the yin-yang. Masuda said, “The concept of Black and White was kind of these opposing forces.” Masuda went on to explain that a ‘Gray’ release would betray the concept from the original ‘Black’ and ‘White’ games.

In that same interview the concept of remakes came up. As we stated above, Game Freak has always been comfortable re-making their older properties. In fact, they might be more focused on it than we think. Masuda said, “I think it’s important (…) to give these memories, this content, another chance to shine for new players.” Masuda is obviously dipping his quote into the waters of more potential remakes in the future. It shouldn’t surprise anyone at home to hear that Game Freak isn’t dead-set on creating new content every single year.

Right now all eyes are on ‘Ultra Sun’ and ‘Ultra Moon’ as fans await the November launch date. So far announcements have been relatively scarce. However, a recently announced ‘Veteran Trainer’s Dual Pack’ was announced which gives buyers both ‘Ultra Sun’ and ‘Ultra Moon’ along with 16 art cards and a DL code for additional items in the game.
